MMI-Supported Microscopy Research Profiled in Nature
Dec. 15, 2010
In August, Dr. Francesca Malfatti was awarded the International Recognition of Professional Excellence (IRPE) prize from the International Ecology Institute. Now, in a recent issue of Nature, she talks about her research and the scientific implications of the surprising relationship she uncovered between cyanobacteria (primary producers) and the heterotrophic bacteria that consume the nutritious byproducts they create. Dr. Malfatti’s work on atomic force microscopy and 3-D deconvolution microscopy was supported through funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation’s Marine Microbiology Initiative.
