Data Intensive Science – Request for Ideas:
The Science Program at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation is excited to announce a request for ideas (RFI) in the domain of Data Intensive Science. This RFI is open now, and be found here: http://dis.ideascale.com
The volume and complexity of scientific data are overwhelming current research practices, and create additional barriers to an already challenged science infrastructure, workforce and funding landscape. Many agencies and foundations are looking at ways to best combat the growing wave of challenges caused by today’s data deluge, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation’s RFI on Data Intensive Science is intended to add to this growing body of thinking. This RFI is being conducted in the open and for the benefit of anyone looking to navigate these areas. The Science Program will review the ideas, comments and votes generated as we conduct our strategic planning processes this year.
We encourage you and your colleagues to participate in this RFI through the middle of September, 2011. Please note that this is not a proposal solicitation, and there is no promise of funding in this area. However, we encourage you to add your suggestions and comments here http://dis.ideascale.com. Your contributions will help the Science Program find areas of investment that can make the most difference in the domain of Data Intensive Science.
FAQs:
1. How will the ideas posted on the RFI site be used by the Foundation?
The Science Program will review all the ideas, votes and comments submitted through the IdeaScale site as part of its strategic planning activities. It is likely we will organize these suggestions into overarching themes (combining and collapsing similar suggestions) for ease of review.
2. What do you mean by “Data Intensive Science”?
The Science program recognizes that most every discipline is experiencing a significant growth in the quantity and diversity of data it manages. We explicitly use the word “intensive” to mean both extremely large amounts of data as well as extremely heterogeneous types of data. The Science Program believes that there is value in tackling both the well documented “big data” challenges as well as those in the “long tail” of science data.
3. I have a great grant concept in this area, how can I submit a proposal?
The Science Program does not accept unsolicited proposals, and this call for ideas is not a solicitation for project proposals. You are welcome to submit ideas on the IdeaScale site and we appreciate your interest in Data Intensive Science, and any suggestions you might like to share for how the Foundation can make a difference in this area.
4. Will the Science Program’s strategic plan be available for public review or comment?
A version of the final results of our strategic planning will be made publicly available.
5. How many areas in DIS will the Science Program pursue?
It is unknown at this time, we plan to have an update on our strategic planning early in 2012
6. Are these ideas anonymous or is there any way to make comments anonymous?
When registering for an account on IdeaScale, you may choose to identify yourself or to make your profile anonymous to this community. Make sure your profile type is set to “Hidden” if you wish for your comments/ideas to be anonymous.
7. How much money will the Science Program grant in this area?
It is unknown at this time, we plan to have an update on our strategic planning early in 2012
