The Broad Institute, with support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation’s Marine Microbiology Initiative, has launched a new webpage for its Marine Phage, Virus, and Virome Sequencing Project.
Phage and viruses play a critical role in shaping microbial diversity, abundance, and evolution and in this capacity have a significant impact on atmospheric composition and ecosystem function. In an effort to understand the ecology and evolution of marine phage and viruses and to explore the diversity and ecological roles of entire phage/viral communities through metagenomics, the Broad Institute is collaborating with the Marine Microbiology Initiative and research groups whose sequencing nominations were chosen by a selection committee.
The Marine Phage, Virus, and Virome Sequencing Project webpage contains information about this groundbreaking initiative, with details about the project and strain selection process, frequently asked questions, and suggested protocols for sample preparation. In addition, the site hosts information on the sequencing, assembly, annotation, and data release of approved genomes and viromes.
About the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation
The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, established in 2000, seeks to advance environmental conservation and scientific research around the world and improve the quality of life in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Foundation’s Marine Microbiology Initiative supports the discovery and dissemination of scientific findings and technological developments in the fields of marine microbiology and microbial ecology, which contribute to ocean health and productivity.
