For the third consecutive time, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation grantee El Camino Hospital received Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® distinguishes health care organizations for nursing excellence, quality patient care and innovations in professional nursing practice. Only six percent of all U.S. hospitals have received Magnet recognition.

Established in 1990, Magnet is a well-recognized program that drives excellence in nursing. It requires organizations to develop, disseminate and enculturate evidence-based criteria that result in a positive work environment for nurses and, by extension, all employees. When the Betty Irene Moore Nursing Initiative began more than 10 years ago, there were no Magnet designated hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area. With foundation support, four additional hospitals have achieved Magnet status, including Stanford Hospital & Clinics (2007, with re-designation in 2012); Washington Hospital Healthcare System (2011); UCSF Medical Center (2012); and UC Davis Medical Center (2014). El Camino Hospital first gained Magnet designation in 2005 and was re-designated in 2010. Hospitals re-apply for Magnet status every four years.
