Our chief program officer of science, Robert Kirshner, spoke with Inside Philanthropy’s Tate Williams about his decision to join the foundation,  how the foundation determines what to fund in science and the importance of funding basic scientific research.

Determining what the foundation might support requires thoughtful analysis. To evaluate possible ideas, Dr. Kirshner explains the foundation is guided by the Statement of Founders’ Intent. Two important questions asked: is the work measurable? And can the work make an enduring difference?

“We like to get out on the front edge if we can. We'll do things that the [government] agencies wouldn't do. But we know that when it comes time for the big implementations, you have to make the case, and then you have to get the scientific community onboard to help the agencies choose wisely.”
