Traceability is a great concept – who wouldn't want to know exactly where their seafood comes from? But is implementing a traceability system a good investment for your company? If you’re not sure, then you might want to take advantage of a free tool now available from The Institute of Food Technologists’ (IFT) Global Food Traceability Center (GFTC).

The group’s Seafood Traceability Financial Tool helps suppliers and others in the seafood distribution chain understand the financial impact of implementing a traceability program. “The tool itself, I think, is useable by any organization in the seafood chain,” said Brian Sterling, managing director of the GFTC.” I think that the ones that would be most interested in it would be at the harvest side, as well as at the processing and packing side. Maybe small retailers would look into it.” The tool has been live for about a month, Sterling told Seafood International. “We've got well over 100 users right now.”
