In this month's Stanford Social Innovation Review, Karen Poiani and co-author Elizabeth O'Neill discuss lessons learned from "mega-grants." The authors define mega-grants as "commitments of tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars to single organizations, often for long periods of time."

In particular, they discussed the benefits and challenges involved in two mega-grants from the foundation to Conservation International and the California Institute of Technology.

The beneficial outcomes showed large, long-term funding enables significant outcomes to be realized and helps to strengthen institutions. The challenges revolve around making tough tradeoffs and maintaining trusted partnerships.
