Foundation president Harvey Fineberg penned a piece for the Washington Monthly’s Successes of Philanthropy series about earthquake readiness, highlighting an early warning system being tested in Oregon, Washington State and California. The ShakeAlert system is designed to provide seconds of warning before an earthquake hits, just enough time to take protective action.

The foundation’s early support jumpstarted this comprehensive earthquake early warning system that draws on the full power of the research instruments and theoretical studies that researchers had begun to deploy.
