Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education was established in 1985 by a consortium of San Francisco Bay Area companies in partnership with the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Based in Santa Clara, California, the group exists to address the critical need for a strong, highly skilled workforce in math, science and technological fields.
This industry-education partnership focuses on teachers as the primary agents for effecting meaningful change in schools by providing summer internships for almost 3,500 teachers throughout its history. Teachers are paired with scientists, technologists and engineers in stimulating hands-on projects for eight weeks. A variety of studies have been published by the group to assess the impact of its Summer Fellowship Program as well. The organization also supports inquiry-based science teaching and student-driven research through its IISME Research Collaborative. The collaborative has funded over 60 teachers in Silicon Valley, Austin and Phoenix.
