Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
With more than 60,000 caregivers and staff, Dignity Health is the fifth largest health system in the nation and the largest health care provider in California. The organization serves diverse communities in forty hospitals and care centers across California, Arizona and Nevada. Its history began in 1854, when eight Sisters of Mercy arrived in San Francisco from Ireland and founded St. Mary’s Hospital to care for residents struck by cholera, typhoid and influenza. Over time the number of facilities grew, and in 1986 a merger with another Sisters of Mercy congregation formed Catholic Healthcare West, which was renamed Dignity Health in 2012.
Dignity Health provides primary care, preventive treatment, chronic disease management, trauma services and a wide range of specialized practices in urban and rural communities across its network of sites.
