Founded in 1987, the New York-based Environmental Grantmakers Association is a global membership organization comprised of a variety of foundations with a commitment to healthy, equitable and sustainable ecosystems, communities and economies. Membership has grown from a core group of 12 to more than 200 foundations, giving programs and major donors concerned with the environment. The organization shares knowledge, fosters debate, cultivates leaders, facilitates collaboration and inspires action. While Environmental Grantmakers Association does not make grants directly, nearly $1 billion is collectively given annually by member institutions, representing nearly 40 percent of U.S. environmental philanthropy.
Programs include a yearly fall retreat, publications that analyze data and present the state of the field to members, and a semi-annual online journal that includes member perspectives and information about pressing environmental issues and opportunities. Working groups, such as the Blue Sky Funders Forum, advance environmental education and facilitate collaboration and strategic grantmaking. Briefings and webinars help members understand environmental trends and pending policies on topics such as climate change, nuclear energy, biomass and biofuel.
