Established in 1959, the Summer Science Program is a nonprofit located in Cary, North Carolina. The organization operates in cooperation with New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, the University of Colorado at Boulder, California Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Its goal is to challenge academically talented rising seniors interested in science and engineering careers to develop their skills in a supportive community of bright, motivated peers. The program takes places each summer on two campuses: New Mexico Institute of Technology in Socorro and University of Colorado in Boulder
Each year, 36 young scientists are admitted to the program. Participants conduct a summer research project in astronomy and space science and study advanced topics in the physical sciences, mathematics and computer science through a combination of lectures, guest speakers, field trips and research. Seven faculty at each campus mentor students and oversee the curriculum.
The Summer Science Program is one of the oldest programs of its kind and the only one managed and largely funded by its own alumni, parents, former faculty and those who recognize the importance of inspiring the next generation of scientists.
