Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Plymouth Marine Laboratory in Plymouth, England, is an independent collaborative center of the Natural Environment Research Council. The laboratory was founded in 1988 by drawing together elements of the Laboratory of the Marine Biological Association with the Natural Environment Research Council Institute for Marine Environmental Research. In 2002, Plymouth Marine Laboratory changed from being a wholly owned Natural Environment Research Council research center to an independent organization with charitable status.
The laboratory focuses on global issues of global warming and sustainability, and monitors the effects of ocean acidity on corals and shellfish. It also cultivates algae that could be used to make biofuels or in the treatment of wastewater by using technology such as photo-bioreactors. It also works alongside the Boots Group to investigate the usage of algae in skin care protectants.
The laboratory has a wholly owned trading subsidiary, PML Applications Ltd, created to facilitate the exploitation and application of research and its products and to provide a more appropriate interface for working with end users and industrial and commercial partners.
