The Global Canopy Programme, based in Oxford, England, is an international nongovernmental organization with the mission to accelerate the global transition to a deforestation-free economy. The think tank works to demonstrate the scientific, political and business case for safeguarding forests as natural capital that underpins water, food, energy, and health and climate security for all.
Since 2001, the organization has aimed to achieve its mission through a strong multidisciplinary team with extensive field experience, innovative ideas and a global stakeholder network that and engages high-level policymakers, global businesses and financial institutions.
Projects target the key pressure points threatening tropical forests around the world. The Amazonia Security Agenda explores how Amazonia’s forests, rivers, rainfall and natural wealth underpin security for local people and for Latin America as a whole. The Unlocking Forest Finance Project aims to catalyze the creation of financial mechanisms to stop the conversion of tropical forests to produce commodities and to transition towards sustainable modes of development. And the website Forest 500 lists private and public entities that have the power to end deforestation, and ranks them according to their deforestation pledges.
