Founded in 1890 and located in Spring Harbor, New York, the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a private institution with research programs focusing on cancer, neuroscience, plant genetics, genomics and quantitative biology. The laboratory is one of a handful of institutions that played a central role in the development of molecular genetics and molecular biology and is ranked among the leading basic research institutions in the world in molecular biology and genetics with its more than 600 researchers and technicians.
Since its inception, the institution’s campus on the north shore of Long Island has been a center of biology education. Cold Spring Harbor’s educational programs serve professional scientists, doctoral students in biology, teachers of biology in the K-12 system and students from the elementary grades through high school. Its meetings and courses program hosts more than 12,000 scientists from around the world each year on its campuses in Long Island and in Suzhou, China.
