Since 1989, the Center for International Environmental Law has used the power of law to protect the environment, promote human rights and ensure a just and sustainable society.
With offices in Washington, D.C. and Geneva, Switzerland, its team of attorneys, policy experts and support staff works to provide legal counsel and advocacy, policy research and capacity building across four program areas: climate and energy, environmental health, human rights and environment, and people, land and resources.
The center hosts an intern program for law students and fellows to educate the next generation of international environmental advocates. Over its history, the center has trained more than 425 interns and law fellows from 54 countries. In conjunction with this program, the center conducts a joint research and teaching program with American University’s Washington College of Law. Annually, the organization recognizes exceptional contributions to international environmental law with its International Environmental Law Award and outstanding contributions to addressing climate change through its semi-annual Frederick R. Anderson Climate Change Award.
