Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Formed in 1993, the Marine Fish Conservation Network unites a coalition of fisherman, conservationists, scientists and citizens to conserve and revitalize wild ocean fisheries. The organization works to end overfishing, rebuild fish populations and foster a fisheries management system that protects marine ecosystems and the local communities that depend on them.
The network’s legislative platform helped change federal policy in 1996 with the passage of the Sustainable Fisheries Act from a policy that promotes fishing to one that conserves fish populations and habitat to ensure long-term ocean productivity. Today, the organization works to preserve the science and conservation advancements that have been secured in legislative reauthorizations and to make additional improvements that ensure the long-term health of U.S. fisheries and the wellbeing of fishing communities. Legislative advocacy, data collection and analysis, industry reports and public communication campaigns are tools used to advance the network’s goals.
