Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Established by public vote in 1990, the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District protects the diverse agricultural, natural resource and open space lands of California’s Sonoma County. The district is currently funded through 2031 by a quarter-cent sales tax that generates approximately $18 million each year. Its goals include supporting the economic vitality of working farms, maintaining the county’s rich rural character, preserving natural beauty and vistas, protecting water quality and supply and providing connection between urban and natural areas for people and wildlife. The district also partners with other groups to leverage funding and demonstrate the economic and environmental benefits of conservation, stewardship, recreation and educational experiences.
Conservation planning activities use data, technology, community engagement and legislative tracking to inform conservation decision-making. Land acquisition aims to create a county-wide connected network of natural and working lands through conservation easements, fee purchases and a local matching grant program for open space projects. Land stewardship ensures the enhancement of protected lands through monitoring, enforcement and capital improvements. The district also contracts with local nonprofits to conduct educational programs and outings to connect schools and the general public with its work.
