The Salk Institute for Biological Studies is an independent, scientific research institute located in La Jolla, California. Founded in 1960 by Jonas Salk, the developer of the polio vaccine, the institute employs 850 researchers in 60 research groups and focuses its research in three areas: molecular biology and genetics, neurosciences and plant biology.
Research topics include cancer, diabetes, birth defects, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, AIDS and the neurobiology of American Sign Language. The institute consistently ranks among the top life sciences research institutions in the Unites States and is home to a highly collaborative group of scientists supported by on-campus research centers and core facilities equipped with cutting-edge technology.
The institute’s education outreach programs are tailored for adults and student groups, with special events designed for all ages. Programs include a mobile science lab, a high school scholars program and the March of Dimes High School Science Day.
