Located in Durham, North Carolina, the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation conducts research and education to promote the worldwide preservation of biological heritage. Shaped by the work of environmentalist E.O. Wilson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Harvard professor emeritus, the foundation works to protect key species and avoid further destruction of the earth’s ecosystems.
Education initiatives use video, social media, literature and art to raise awareness and foster a new generation of explorers, environmental policymakers and informed citizens. The E.O. Wilson Life on Earth biology textbook, released in 2014, is an interactive multimedia digital tool for high schoolers to learn and retain information about the living world. MEMO, an art-science sculptural collaboration on England’s Island of Portland, serves as both an observatory and learning site to celebrate biodiversity.
Additionally, the E.O. Biodiversity Laboratory at Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique is a modern scientific laboratory that offers research and training in biodiversity documentation and conservation biology to local and visiting researchers. The institution also helps guide the restoration of the Gorongosa and provides scientific and economic opportunities to local populations in the region.
