Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Terrafirma Risk Retention Group was created by the Land Trust Alliance as part of its national strategy of conservation permanence to insure participating land trust members against the legal costs of defending conservation. The service was designed in consultation with insurance specialists, attorneys and land trusts across America. Membership is available to all land trusts with conservation easements or fee lands held for conservation. The organization is licensed as a captive insurance risk retention group by the State of Vermont and is owned and managed by participating land trusts.
A member’s committee represents the owner members and is responsible for approving policies and strategic direction. A claims committee of outside experts and land trust representatives oversees claims management. The organization provides expert assistance to minimize disputes and shares tools and training on risk management best practices to prevent future claims. The services are intended to provide the broadest possible coverage for the greatest number of land trusts, protecting trust reserves and their integrity from legal challenges.
