Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
The Santa Clara County Open Space Authority, headquartered in San Jose, California, is an independent special district governed by an elected board of directors.
The authority was established by the state legislature in 1993 at the request of community leaders who recognized the importance of maintaining the ecological integrity of the region. The authority is funded through a $24 a year parcel tax, as well as through grants and gifts.
The organization’s main purpose is to preserve key portions of the natural environment in order to balance continuing urban growth. Purchasing land, acquiring easements, contributing funds to joint conservation efforts and careful land management are the authority’s major preservation tools. Since its founding, the Open Space Authority has protected more than 17,500 acres of open space, preserving the region’s scenic beauty, protecting water resources and other natural capital and providing outdoor recreation opportunities for Santa Clara County residents.
