Wikimedia Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging the growth, development and distribution of free, multilingual and educational content to the public at no cost to the user. Established in 2003, the Wikimedia Foundation operates some of the largest collaboratively edited reference projects in the world, including Wikipedia, the internet encyclopedia.
Based in San Francisco, CA, the foundation supports and operates Wikipedia and other free knowledge projects. Its work is guided by its mission to share the sum of all knowledge with every person in the world, and it supports the community of volunteers who contribute to Wikimedia projects. The foundation helps make free knowledge accessible online, lower barriers to access and make it easier for everyone to share what they know.
Although the foundation is mostly known for hosting Wikipedia, it also hosts Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikimedia Commons, Wikispecies, Wikinews, Wikiversity, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, Wikimedia Incubator and Meta-Wiki.
