The University of New South Wales was established in 1949 to focus on scientific, technological and professional disciplines. The main campus is located on 38 hectares in Kensington, seven kilometers from the center of Sydney. Other locations include the art and design campus in Paddington and the University of New South Wales Canberra at the Australia Defence Force Academy. Approximately 50,000 students come from 128 countries and enroll in a range of undergraduate, graduate and research schools that include art and design, business, science, law, engineering, medicine and the built environment.

Research focuses on areas critical to the future such as climate change, marine microbiology, renewable energies, medical treatments and technologies, and public health and aging. More than 120 centers and institutes work across traditional school and faculty boundaries on topics including climate system science, quantum computation and traumatic brain injury.
