The Farmer’s Conservation Alliance was founded in 2005 when the Farmer’s Irrigation District of Hood River, Oregon, licensed the Farmers Screen™ technology to the organization. The directive was to take the product to market and to reinvest profits into additional rural resource solutions. The Farmers Screen™ is a self-cleaning device that allows fish and debris to pass through and return to the river. It requires minimal maintenance, provides protection from injury for fish and offers effective debris management. The National Marine Fisheries Services granted approvals for the product in 2011, and screens have since been installed in four western states, opening hundreds of river miles for fish passage, saving owners hundreds of thousands of dollars annually in operation and maintenance, and optimizing fish friendly hydropower capacity.

The alliance also leads environmental campaigns to promote rural awareness, the benefits of agriculture and resource conservation. The Rural Roots public awareness campaign, for example, uses storytelling and photography to celebrate rural Oregonians making environmental and economic contributions. The Navigator is a publication that provides an index and guide to all U.S. incentive programs available to Oregon’s homeowners, farmers and small business owners for energy efficiency upgrades and renewable energy technology installations. A new Farmer’s Conservation Alliance Ventures Program will incubate the development of regional and national entrepreneurial solutions that improve agricultural efficiencies and environmental conditions.
