Established in 1995, the Great Land Trust works with willing landowners, agencies, communities, local governments and other partners to conserve south-central Alaska’s lands and waterways essential to the quality of life and economic health of their communities.

South-central Alaska—abundant in natural resources—is one of the fastest growing areas in the United States. The trust’s imperative is to conserve wetlands, salmon habitat, farmlands and places of cultural and recreational value throughout the territory. Its work helps to sustain the unique quality of life that has drawn settlers and businesses to the area.

The Great Land Trust’s work encompasses a number of program areas. In support of clean water and wetland health, the trust identifies, prioritizes and conserves the most vital wetlands in south-central Alaska. With its Salmon Habitat Conservation Program, the trust collaborates with willing landowners and other partners to conserve vital salmon habitat. Through the Community Asset Mapping Initiative, the trust works with communities to identify the land types important for maintaining the Alaskan way of life. The trust also works with private landowners interested in protecting the lands for cultural and traditional use and connects individual neighborhoods to public open space in Anchorage and other urban areas.
