Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
The San Francisco-based Earth Innovation Institute fosters rural development that keeps forests and fisheries intact and rewards farmers, fisherman and ranchers for using sustainable practices. Evolving from three decades of fieldwork in the Brazilian Amazon, the organization has grown to support four offices on three continents. The institute partners with universities, research organizations and governments around the world to advance sustainable development, slow deforestation, improve agricultural management and reduce emissions from crop and livestock.
Earth Innovation Institute works to create a shared rural development agenda that improves agricultural yields, slows the destruction of ecosystems and engages multiple sectors in local planning. The Forests, Farms and Finance Initiative, for example, links sustainable supply chain initiatives, financial incentives and public policies to reduce deforestation and environmental degradation. The Sustainable Tropics Alliance engages a multi-stakeholder group to improve rural livelihoods through low emissions land use and natural resource management in key areas of the tropics. Additionally, the organization’s partnership with Columbian government agencies resulted in a set of eight recommendations for a national land-use strategy designed to increase production and reduce deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions and rural poverty by 2020.
