Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Based in Dillingham, Alaska, the United Tribes of Bristol Bay is the first tribally chartered consortium in the Bristol Bay region of Southwest Alaska. Its mission is to protect the lands and waters that support the traditional way of life of the indigenous people in the region by advocating against unsustainable, large-scale hard rock mines.
Founded in 2013, the consortium acts as a political division of its member tribal governments who have been leading environmental justice work in Bristol Bay for decades. It also seeks to unite the voices of six Bristol Bay tribes, which has grown to represent thirteen tribal governments. Member tribes represent thirteen of the Yup’ik, Denai’na and Alutiq indigenous communities in the territory. The United Tribes of Bristol Bay works to ensure that the voice of Bristol Bay’s tribal citizens is reaching the decision-makers and federal agencies that make critical decisions affecting the region.
The work of the United Tribes of Bristol Bay is primarily focused in the three following areas: tribal consultation with the federal government on issues affecting the Native way of life; grassroots organizing in the local, statewide and national arenas and youth empowerment and organizing in the Bristol Bay region.
