Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Founded in 1990, Summer Search works with low-income, at risk students across the country to encourage their potential and help them become change agents in their communities. Each participant receives a customized set of social and emotional support services over a seven to nine-year period, anchored by professional mentoring. Summer Search participants enroll the summer of their sophomore year of high school and continue engagement through college graduation. Programs are located in Boston, New York City, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Seattle, Silicon Valley and the North San Francisco Bay Area.
Summer Search receives student nominations from partner schools each year. Selected young people participate in a two to three-week summer wilderness expedition after their sophomore year. Junior-year summer activities range from a second wilderness expedition to academic enrichment on college campuses and community service projects in the United States and abroad. College counselors help students find the best match based on their career goals, academic achievements and scholarship and financial aid opportunities. Mentoring, counseling and career exploration support are offered until students earn their degree. Upon college graduation they join the alumni network which offers career advancement opportunities and a mechanism to give back to youth in the program.
