The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research was established in 1982 and is based in Toronto, Ontario. The organization’s mission is to connect the world's best minds through global research networks that address important, complex challenges facing humanity.

The institute is a global organization, comprised of nearly 350 fellows, scholars and advisors from more than 100 institutions in 16 countries. It partners with the Government of Canada, provincial governments, individuals, foundations, corporations and research institutions to extend its impact in the world.

As of 2014, the institute supported research in 11 major multidisciplinary areas including cosmology and gravity, earth system evolution, integrated microbial biodiversity, child and brain development, genetic networks, institutions, organizations and growth, neural computation and adaptive perception, quantum materials, quantum information science, social interactions, identity and well-being and successful societies.
