Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is a science philanthropic organization established by the aviator and industrialist Howard Hughes in 1953. HHMI scientists and students pursue fundamental questions about living systems to advance biomedical research and science education for the benefit of humanity.
During the last 25 years, HHMI has established itself as a driving force in increasing our understanding of some of society’s most vexing health problems—including AIDS, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes—with the ultimate aim of improving the lives of people everywhere.
In 2006, HHMI opened the Janelia Research Campus, where leading scientists pursue long-term, high-risk/high-reward research in a campus specially designed to bring together researchers from disparate disciplines. Janelia scientists are working on some of science's most challenging problems: discovering the basic rules and mechanisms of the brain's information-processing system and developing optical, biological and computational technologies for creating and interpreting biological images.
Our work with HHMI includes support of the Advanced Optical Imaging Center at Janelia, to expand the number and diversity of biologists who have access to the unique state-of-the-art optical imaging microscopes. We also partner with the institute to support 15 of the nation’s most innovative plant scientists through the Plant Biology Investigator Program.
