Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
The Aquaculture Stewardship Council was founded in 2010 by the World Wildlife Foundation and the Dutch Sustainable Trade Initiative to manage global standards for responsible aquaculture. The organization grew out of the World Wildlife Foundation’s Aquaculture Dialogues, a series of eight roundtables with more than 2,000 participating farmers, retailers, nongovernmental organizations, scientists and other stakeholders that resulted in a commitment to measurable and performance-based standards for responsibly farmed seafood.
The international nonprofit’s primary work is to manage these global standards, transforming aquaculture by using market mechanisms that create value. Through its certification program and seafood label, the Netherlands-based organization recognizes and rewards responsible aquaculture, promotes best environmental and social choices and helps move the seafood markets toward sustainability.
