Servicio Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas del Peru (National Service of Protected Natural Areas of Peru) is the Peruvian governmental agency responsible for directing and establishing the technical and administrative criteria for the conservation of national protected areas and maintenance of biological diversity. Under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Environment, the regulatory authority carries out its work in coordination with regional governments and local property owners.
Peru has over 150 national protected areas—including parks, reserves, national sanctuaries, historic sanctuaries, reserved zones, game preserves, protected forests, communal reserves, scenic reserves and wildlife refuges—covering almost 20 percent of the country.
