Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
The International Seafood Sustainability Association was launched in 2009 by a group of scientists, leaders in the tuna industry and environmentalists concerned about the future of global tuna fisheries. The organization uses science, advocacy and partnerships to promote the long-term conservation of tuna stocks, reduce bycatch and ensure overall ecosystem health. A core objective is to increase the number of fisheries meeting the Marine Stewardship Council certification standard without conditions. Another is to become a primary resource for vessel owners, traders, processors and marketers in the tuna industry.
In cooperation with Regional Fisheries Management Organizations across the world, the association advances sustainable tuna stock management practices including catch limits, stock monitoring and regulation. Press releases, trade reports and blog entries highlight best practices in fisheries conservation, data and research on the status of the tuna stock, and new organizational partnerships supporting the work.
