Located in Baltimore, Maryland, the National Aquarium features a living collection of more than 20,000 fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles and marine mammals residing in naturalistic habitats. The mission of the aquatic education and conservation organization is “to inspire conservation of the world’s aquatic treasures.”

Opened in 1981, the aquarium attracts over 1.8 million visitors annually. Education programs reach thousands of students each year with activities in schools and in the field. Conservation and research efforts extend from local actions in restoring vital habitats in Baltimore Harbor and the greater Chesapeake Bay watershed to global efforts to protect marine sanctuaries and coral reefs. The National Aquarium also conducts pioneering conservation research to understand, interpret and explain aquatic ecosystems and to advocate for ocean health. Projects include addressing uncertainty in fisheries science and management and researching the basic biology of the threatened spotted eagle ray.
