Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Fair Trade USA’s mission is to enable sustainable development and community empowerment by cultivating a more equitable global trade model that benefits farmers, workers, consumers, industry and the earth. The Oakland-based nonprofit achieves its mission by certifying and promoting Fair Trade products and is the leading third-party certifier of such products in the country.
Formerly known as Transfair USA, the organization was founded in 1998 by the Institute for Agricultural Trade Policy. Today, Fair Trade USA audits and certifies transactions between U.S. companies and their international suppliers to guarantee that the farmers and workers producing Fair Trade Certified goods are paid fair prices and wages, work in safe conditions, protect the environment and receive community development funds to empower and uplift their communities. In addition, the organization educates consumers, brings new manufacturers and retailers into the Fair Trade system, and provides farmers with tools, training and resources to thrive as international businesspeople. Its Co-op Link programs strengthen farming communities around the world by helping cooperatives improve quality, increase productivity, access capital cost-effectively and become stronger business partners.
