Founded in 1982, the Anchorage-based Southcentral Foundation works in partnership with the native community to achieve wellness through health and related services. The nonprofit serves nearly 65,000 Alaska Native and American Indian people living in Anchorage, Matanuska-Susina Valley and 55 rural villages in the Anchorage Service Unit, which comprises a 107,400 square mile area across southcentral Alaska.
The health system is managed by Alaska natives for Alaska natives, and more than 1,850 employees work across 80 programs. Services include: primary care, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, audiology, dental care, optometry, behavioral health, elder care, family health and wellness, complementary medicine, native men’s wellness and traditional healing. The foundation employs an innovative integrated model of care called the Nuka system that views patients as customers in charge of their health and the health care system.
