Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
The Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association represents the voice of Maine’s community-based fishermen. The organization works to restore the fisheries of the Gulf of Maine and sustain historic local fishing communities which declined from 188 vessels in 1996 to only 52 in 2010. Association goals are to rebuild marine life, keep small-boat fisherman on the water and ensure that fishing is part of the economic future of Maine for generations to come.
The organization develops advocacy positions and provides opportunities for local fishermen to lend their perspective to policy development. It works to support the Port Clyde Community Groundfish sector that allows fisherman to work together to harvest a combined catch, which increases flexibility in business planning while limiting overfishing.
Partnering with groups such as the Island Institute and the Gulf of Maine Resource Center, the organization works to reduce fuel usage on boats, avoid non-target species catch and increase access to areas previously closed to commercial fisherman. The association also helps local fisherman with business planning and building more sustainable practices that support economic and conservation needs.
