Northwestern University is a private research university located in Evanston, Illinois, and established in 1851. Composed of twelve schools and colleges, the university offers 124 undergraduate degrees and 145 professional degrees. With an undergraduate enrollment of 8,900 in 2014 and an admission rate of thirteen percent, Northwestern is one of the most selective universities in the country.
Northwestern is the only private university in the Big Ten conference and requires a foundation in both liberal arts and sciences for all majors. The university offers honors, accelerated and joint degrees in science, engineering, mathematics, medicine and journalism.
Northwestern had an annual sponsored research budget of $550 million in 2014; it also has one of the largest university endowments in the United States (more than nine billion dollars). Cementing its status as a large and prolific research institution, university researchers have formed more than 50 startup companies based on technologies developed at Northwestern.
