Founded in 1883, the University of Texas System is one of the nation’s largest systems of higher education with 14 institutions that educate more than 217,000 students. Its mission is to provide high-quality educational opportunities for the enhancement of the human resources of Texas, the nation and the world through intellectual and personal growth.
With almost 20,000 faculty, including Nobel laureates, and more than 70,000 health care professionals, researchers, student advisors and support staff, the UT System is also one of the largest employers in the state.
The system’s eight academic institutions include its flagship campus, the University of Texas at Austin. Six health institutions include centers in Dallas, Houston, Galveston, San Antonio and Tyler, with two more planned for Austin and the Rio Grande Valley. The UT System ranks third in the nation in patent applications and third in federal research expenditures.
Our work with the University of Texas System ranges from an investigator award to develop and test a new quantitative description of bacterial genomes derived from evolutionary statistics, to the integration of conservation with community demands in eastern Ecuador.
