Sempervirens Fund, based in Los Altos and established in 1900, is California’s oldest land trust. The fund’s mission is to protect and permanently preserve coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) forests, wildlife habitat, watersheds and other important natural features of California’s Santa Cruz Mountains, and to encourage people to appreciate and enjoy this environment. It does this by purchasing land for protection and transferring it to state or local agencies. By pooling funds from donors in the community, the fund can purchase land, establish conservation easements and negotiate trail easements.
In support of its mission, Sempervirens Fund protects 2,000-year-old redwoods, 20 million-year-old redwood forests, clean air, fresh water and stunning waterfalls, abundant wildlife (such as coyotes, salmon and endangered marbled murrelets), extensive trails, campgrounds and picnic spots. Since its inception, the fund has permanently protected more than 53 square-miles of local redwood forests and watersheds for people, wildlife and future generations.
