Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Formed in 1977 in response to the catastrophic environmental impact of the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, the Environmental Defense Center uses education, advocacy and legal action to protect California’s South Central Coast. As the only public interest law firm between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the Environmental Defense Center works primarily within Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.
The organization has represented more than 110 nonprofits, ensuring habitat for endangered species and safeguarding clean air and clean water. It works to preserve the coastline, stop offshore oil development and protect marine life in the region. Since its inception, the center has permanently conserved more than 100,000 acres of open space. In addition, its Safe Passage Project works to balance the needs of humans, whales and ships in the Santa Barbara Channel.
