Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Malama Maunalua is a nonprofit organization founded in 2006 in Honolulu, Hawaii, focused on restoring the health of the state’s Maunalua Bay. In the past 30 years the bay has been greatly affected by population growth and development due to polluted urban runoff, invasive species and human uses. The organization engages hundreds of volunteers to implement run-off reduction practices, clear alien algae and prevent erosion. An awareness campaign targets landowners and residents, offering strategies each household can take to revitalize Maunalua Bay.
In September 2015, the organization launched Imua Manunalua, a community-based marine planning project to protect the 6.5-mile bay area. The two-year marine spatial planning process will create a resource management roadmap for healthier, sustainable use of the bay. The plan will outline a set of specific actions that balance the need to restore marine resources and protect the ecosystem with the need to maintain local livelihoods and preserve the culture of the Maunalua region.
