Syracuse University, founded in 1870, is a private university located in the center of New York State. It was one of the first universities to promote equal education for both men and women and the first to confer a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Today, nearly 22,000 undergraduate and graduate students from all 50 states and more than 120 countries are enrolled in twelve schools and colleges, including arts and sciences, education, engineering, communications, law, and visual and performing arts.
Partnerships and immersion programs in Syracuse, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and in more than 30 countries give students an opportunity for field work and real-world learning. Community collaborations are focused in five overlapping areas: arts, design and technology, environmental sustainability, global collaborations, inclusive urban education, and neighborhood and cultural entrepreneurship. An interdisciplinary research agenda helps shape understanding on a variety of subjects that cross academic disciplines and include efforts to discover new atomic particles, develop new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease and harness the power of fireflies to inform energy technology.
