Established in 1884, the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom is a membership-based organization that promotes scientific research into all aspects of the marine environment and shares knowledge with the public. The association is governed by an elected council of members and representatives from its founding institutions.

Research priorities cover a range of disciplines including cell biology, physiology and functional biology, phytoplankton, ecosystem change and ecology and animal behavior. Resident fellows and visiting scientists work side-by-side to study issues of fundamental importance in marine biology. Decades of physical and biological marine measure observations provide foundational data for new studies that consider biological responses and adaptation to marine environmental changes. Examples of work include forecasting responses of marine biodiversity to climate change, understanding the ecology of animal movement and studying the biology of key ecological and biogeochemical process in the ocean.
