Founded in 2013, Instituto Milenio de Oceanografía de Chile (Millennium Institute of Oceanography of Chile) is an oceanographic research and education institution dedicated to the exploration of the central and southeastern Pacific. Affiliated with the University of Concepción, the institute’s interdisciplinary team of experts investigate the ecological, physical, biogeochemical aspects of the open ocean as well as the exploration of deep and abyssal ocean, including pelagic ecosystems associated with seamounts, oceanic islands and the Atacama Trench.
Primary areas of research include mesoscale processes, oceanic variability, adaptation to a changing ocean and the deep ocean. Its exploration efforts are assisted by the Cape Horn research vessel to reach unexplored areas of the South Pacific. The institute also offers multiple education programs that range from college courses to internships and research fellowships.
