Charles University in Prague is the oldest and largest university in the Czech Republic. Founded in 1348, it was the first university in Central Europe, east of France and north of Italy, and is one of the oldest universities in Europe in continuous operation.
Its seventeen faculties educate over 50,000 students enrolled in undergraduate, master’s and Ph.D. programs. Teaching and research is carried out by hundreds of specialists in the various disciplines. The prime purpose of Charles University is the diffusion of learning and protection of acquired knowledge, the cultivation of free thought, independent academic research and the arts, and the encouragement of the free creative spirit of humanity. Charles University staff have participated in a range of major international research projects—including the CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) program.
