The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is a land grant university chartered in 1869 that works cooperatively with the three other campuses in the University of Nebraska system. More than 25,000 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled, and over 5,000 degrees are awarded annually. Academic colleges include architecture, arts and sciences, business administration, education and human services, engineering, fine and performing arts, journalism and law. The Agriculture and Natural Resources College also includes an agricultural research division, cooperative extension division and conservation and survey division.
Annual research expenditures total more than $250 million. Materials Research Science and Engineering Center faculty conduct basic research to inform the next generation of electronic and computing technologies. The National Drought Mitigation Center trains governments and other organizations how to prepare for and handle water emergencies. Independent researchers are working on projects ranging from solar energy to turbine maintenance technology and new therapies for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neuromuscular disorders. The new, state-of-the-art Nebraska Innovation Campus is a 249-acre research and technology center focused on building new partnerships between the university and private sector.
