Founded in 1855 as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, Michigan State University is the pioneer land grant institution and the prototype for the entire land grant system. Located on a 5,200 acre campus in East Lansing, three miles from the state capitol, Michigan State was the first university in the country to teach scientific agriculture. Today, approximately 19,600 acres across the state are used for agricultural and natural resource research and education. More than 50,000 students are enrolled in over 200 programs of undergraduate, graduate and professional studies annually. Dozens of research centers enable scientists to study a wide array of disciplines from microbiology to evolution, alternative energy, agriculture and biofuel.

The Michigan State University Board of Trustees is the governing body of the institution, establishing rules and regulations and having general supervision over the university and its funds. The eight-member board is elected by Michigan voters and serve eight-year terms without compensation. Work is organized into committees that include finance, policy, investment, audit, and compensation.

Our work with Michigan State University ranges from a plant biology investigator award to the design and development of innovative science learning measures that capture scientifically grounded critical thinking.
