Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Founded in 1893, the University of Montana is located in Missoula, the state’s second largest city. It is the flagship campus of the University of Montana system that also includes the University of Montana Western in Dillon, Montana Tech in Butte and Helena College. Approximately 15,000 students are enrolled in programs ranging from humanities and sciences to education and human services, forestry and conservation, and health professions and biomedical sciences. Missoula College offers students a two-year program in 35 occupational and technical programs including applied computing and electronics, health care professions and energy and industrial technologies.
Research occurs across the campus through independent faculty projects and interdisciplinary centers and institutes. The Institute on Ecosystems, for example, is a partnership with the Montana State University system to build a statewide effort for environmental and ecosystem science research. The Flathead Lake Biological Station is an ecological research and education center focused on environmental sustainability, biodiversity and bioproductivity. The Montana Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit conducts research on renewable natural resource questions in the areas of wildlife biology, landscape ecology and habitat requirements.
